An adaptive engine, not a questionnaire

A linear test asks everyone the same questions: weaker students exhaust themselves on items beyond their reach, stronger ones grow bored with the obvious. Either way, the time spent measures nothing.

TestFLE adjusts difficulty with every answer. It climbs while the student keeps up, drops back as soon as they lose ground, and narrows in on the point where success becomes irregular. That point defines the level.

Sub-levels matter especially with children: between A1.1 and A1.2 there is often a full school year.

Six skills assessed separately

A single overall level always hides something. A child schooled abroad may understand spoken French at B1 level and struggle with written French at A2: that is a profile, not an average.

• Vocabulary — Recognising and using the lexis expected at each band, from everyday words to abstract nuance.
• Grammar — Agreement, determiners, relative pronouns, sentence structures: the mechanics of the language.
• Conjugation — Tenses, moods and sequence of tenses, from the present to the forms that separate B2 from anything above.
• Language logic — Spotting a contradiction, choosing the right connector, reconstructing an order. This skill depends on neither vocabulary nor grammar, and no other placement test assesses it.
• Listening comprehension — Hearing a passage and drawing the right information from it. In young learners, this is often the strongest skill.
• Reading comprehension — Reading a short text and answering. This is where the gap shows between what a child understands and what they can decode.

Written production is not part of the adaptive score: it cannot be measured the same way. It is available as an AI analysis option, and speaking as a session with a teacher.

Six question formats

A test with only one question type measures only one way of answering.

• Multiple choice, single or multiple correct answers
• Gap fill, using a dropdown
• Reordering words or segments, by drag and drop
• Matching an image to a spoken word
• Short typed answer
• Image-based questions, where the prompt is a picture rather than a text

Built for children, including non-readers

This is what sets TestFLE apart most clearly from a general-purpose placement test.

• Every instruction can be read aloud. A child who cannot decode yet, or who has a reading difficulty, takes the test alone.
• Some questions use images, making it possible to assess vocabulary without going through the written word.
• No timer is displayed. The test is not timed, and the welcome screen tells the student so: this is not an exam.

What the teacher receives

• A radar of the six skills, giving the student’s profile at a glance.
• The previous attempt overlaid on the radar, showing exactly which skills have improved — and which have not.
• A history for each student, from one attempt to the next, across their whole schooling.
• Response time recorded for every question. A student who answers correctly in thirty seconds and one who answers correctly in five do not have the same command of the language. No mark shows that.
• A detailed question-by-question report: the prompt, the student’s answer, the expected answer, the skill and band targeted.

What the school sees

• A dashboard by class, with each group’s average level.
• The student list with their latest level, their progress and their test date.
• Alerts on students who need particular attention.
• An export of results for your own tracking tools.
• Role-based access: a teacher sees their classes, a head of department sees the school.

• The family report — Overall level, breakdown by skill, progress over time, and space for the teacher’s comment. Ready to send, with no re-typing.
• The detailed report — Every question asked, the student’s answer, the expected answer, the skill and band targeted. This is what makes it possible to understand why a level was awarded.

TestFLE runs on your own subdomain, with your logo and your colours. Your students and their families see your school, not ours.

Each school has a partitioned space: no school can view another school’s data.

The standard bank holds 1,500 questions covering the nine bands, from A0 to B2.2. It is included in every subscription.

All our questions are designed, calibrated and validated by experienced, certified teachers of French as a foreign language to children. None is generated without pedagogical review.
